In praise of the sisterhood: we need to stick together

Hello sweet Planetarians, all 404 of you (and a huge hello to the newbies - passing the 400 followers mark slipped under my radar!). Thanks so much for your gorgeous responses to my last post - I'm still absorbing them. Just a quickie I'd like to share today which I spotted over at my clever friend Kirsty's blog.

I don't have a specific point to make, unlike Kirsty. This little video just resonates with me on so many levels and brought me to tears. The most obvious is my Dad's recent death, as you know. But there's so much more to it - the silly and petty comparisons with each other we can get lulled into making, the insensitive comments we might occasionally make and the judgements we can pass on others without knowing their stories.

I guess I've just feeling fragile now and this video reminds me how valuable and heart-moving compassion and kindness are to us all.

So, sit back and let your mind wander. Drink in the beauty of Kelly's message.
It's powerful, isn't it? Something to bear in mind, I think. How does it make you feel? Do jump in and share - I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  1. I consider that one of the greatest gifts I've been able to give my daughter is a demonstration and an explanation of the value of women in each other's lives; the friends who've pulled me through countless difficult times and dumb decisions, and the help I've been able to give in return, perhaps not always enough, but always sincere. Living away from my family as I have done for much more than half my life, it's been my women friends who've been my family. Friends come and go, as they should, but there are always special ones who lift us up or tell us off, who demonstrate extraordinary generosity and compassion. Life would be impossibly hard without the women in our lives. And I add my gorgeous daughter to that list as well :)

  2. I find this very moving and powerful. I value friendships and I try not to judge others. If I am honest I have to admit that I try very hard to remember that that 'good' feeling I get when I am in cahoots with others to make fun of or question someone else is fleeting and unnecessary. It's very hard to rise above it though... I do so enjoy feeling like I am part of the gang. x

  5. What an amazing and moving dedication. I recently lost my sister from Pancreatic Cancer whilst a close friend is now battling her battles with the big C. So feeling very raw. I have some wonderful supporting lifetime girlfriends I could not get by without their love support and help. I hope you are taking one day at a time. Cheers Kerry

  9. Aren't women amazing?! Thank god we have each other! I have some amazing friends and I treasure each and every one! Just having support and being supportive is so important. I found out yesterday a girl in my class found her neighbors mother with her neighbor (a previous student) who had just committed suicide... lives shattered in a heartbeat... now we have to pick up the pieces, get counseling for the girls (just 8 & 13).... so tragic, the terriible terrible cost of depression and lack of support.... just shows how essential it is we take care of each other.... you can not predict a horrible situation like that, but you can easily reach out to someone who looks like they are down... that is definately something I have promised myself to always do. Hugs and happiness to you dear Jane! X

  10. I'm so delighted it struck a chord with you all. She's a powerful speaker. I'm tempted to buy her book 'Lift' (it looks cheap on Booko ☺). J x
