Do not go gentle into that good night

My friends, thanks from the depths of my heart for your kindness, empathy and pure humanity shown in response to my last post about my darling Dad. I don’t have time to reply. Events are unfolding rapidly. However, when I last spoke to Dad, I really felt that if he knew this poem, it would be coursing through his mind.

Do not go gentle into that good night by Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieve it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

I’m off to the hospital to find out whether he’s changed his mind.

  25. Thinking of you Jane.
Just being there for for Dad is the most special thing you can do for him.
Hold his hand, chat to him, tell him he is so loved.
Being with my father right up until he took his last breath was very very special.
I remember thinking how his beautiful mother brought him into the world and her grand daughter stayed with him as he left.
The nurturing role of women is never more important.
