The pixies' bedroom

Mr PB and I grew up sharing bedrooms with our siblings.  That was pretty standard when we grew up in the 1970s.  I can't recall any of my friends having their own room.  That would have been a curiosity instead of the expectation it often is today.  Of course, sharing had its moments and really only worked the best when you were small and privacy wasn't a paramount consideration.  Often the room was divided into 'halves' with an imaginary border delineating whose treasures were stored on which side of the room. There had to be laboriously detailed  rules as to who could do what and when. In the main, it worked pretty well and was the source of many funny memories and family tales.

Our Sydney apartment had two bedrooms so the older pixies had to share.  They are doing the same in Hobart while Sammy has his own.  Here is their door. The yacht up the top was on Joshie's christening cake.
Guess who lives here?
This is the back of their door.
The pixies' height charts
Remember when your parents would keep track of your changes in height by marking a spot on the wall with a pencil, noting your name and date?  They were lovely tangible reminders of a family's heritage as well as the house's.  The only problem was that when you moved house, you left the marks behind.

We found these fabulous 'See Me Grow' height charts which allow you to add a sticker with the child's name and date next to the height marker and then slide in photos of the child at that time in their life. You can find them here. I try really hard to remember to take photos of them doing the same thing at the same age so they can compare themselves (yes, it's really hard to remember and no, I often don't).  The children adore them as they can see themselves growing up literally in front of their eyes.  That's India's on the left, Joshie's in the middle and Sam's on the right.  Poor little chap - no photos yet - it's on the 'to do' list!

Another of the pixies' favourite things is this divine bedtime bus roll from My Sweet Prints. Janette is so clever and a delight to deal with - have a peek at all the other goodies she has on offer.  I have my eye on a few.
The pixies' nightly routine
The pixies check it each night to see if we have forgotten something like cleaning their teeth.  Somehow the time between 'kiss and cuddle' and 'sleeptime' seems rather long on PB but that's a story for another day!  The little lambs in front were given to them by the hospital when they were born.
The morning after the night before
This is the sight which greets me every morning.  How this happens every night remains a mystery to me.  Five minutes later, it looks like this.
Order restored
Note the handmade quilts and rugs piled at the ends of their beds. Closeups to follow.  We intend to paint Joshie's bed (my old one!) green and buy India some girly bedding.  And see all the friends who reside on their beds - how they fit them all in at night, I will never know!

I'd love to hear whether your children share rooms or have their own. What shenanigans do they get up to in their rooms?  Looking forward to hearing from you.

  3. Hi Jane,
I am really enjoying checking with your blog each day, especially you being a fellow Hobart Mum and all.
We have a very small house with only three bedrooms and four children, so three of ours share.
We have one girl, 8 and two boys, 6 and 4 sharing.
It works pretty well, as they don't tend to play in there, but bedtime can be fun and games!
I love the idea of them sharing, don't you?

  4. Thanks, Kat. I completely agree about sharing rooms. I did with my sister until I was 6. I think it fosters sharing and cooperation. Not that they don't fight, of course, but I do think it helps develop those qualities. J x
